Perfect for backpacking in chilly weather
Very high-quality product, non-chafing, odor-free, thin, very lightweight. It was perfect for my late fall backpacking trip. I washed it once before going, air dried it, no problem. I wore it under a thick baseball cap for three long 40F evenings without a campfire. It worked as a scarf too. I especially loved wearing it overnight (35F low). It stayed on my head, and I could easily breathe through it, until I was warm enough to pull the mask down. It was perfectly comfortable while sleeping and moving around in the bag, unlike struggling with a sleeping bag hood pulled tight around my face, or a fleece beanie that won't stay on. I'm only docking a star because of the ear holes. I mostly wore my balaclava with the face mask down, which exposes the holes. They look weird, and I don't want cold air into my ears. I never wear earphones while playing outdoors anyway. Also, I would not count on this product as a ski mask or wear it by itself in windy, sub-freezing conditions, Very high-quality product, non-chafing, odor-free, thin, very lightweight. Add a scarf and hat in windy, sub-freezing conditions.

warm, comfortable, flexible
I like the warmth, comfort and flexibility of this balaclava. It fits my large 7 and 3/4 bald head perfectly and is stretchy enough to put on and readjust easily. The fabric is thin enough to fit easily under a bike helmet. The fabric feels amazingly soft and comfortable while still being very warm for most cool situations. I put another cap on top of it for very cold weather but even then it still helps keep my neck warm. I can pull my head through the face opening easily to make it into a neck gaiter that works well. The mouth covering flap flips up or down easily to add flexibility of coverage and is never in the way when down. I like the large face opening when the flap is down so you don't look like too dangerous. I even sleep in it when camping out or indoors in my unheated house during cool weather. Mine came without any holes for earphones like some of the old photos show but I wouldn't have used them anyway. You could still slip earbuds underneath so they aren't necessary.

first impression
I bought this after looking at the other merino wool balaclavas, some were cheaper, some similar price. What I like about this one is the way it is constructed, it can be folded down and kept as a neck warmer. The headphone holes is thoughtful especially if I wanted to listen to music while riding my bike. No one else does that. I really want to test this in more extreme weather, tested in 40 degrees. Mainly the construction ensures it will form around my head. Like a Ninja. I personally would love more color varieties, but I can always attempt to change it myself. The idea is that instead of just trapping heat, it just naturally warms your body, while avoiding possible moisture build up. So far weather has been very easy lately, when I go through my extreme conditions I will upate this review and reform it a bit.

Definite improvement over my old balaclava!
For years I used a Smartwool light merino balaclava for biking and camping. It worked great under a bike helmet or for keeping my head comfortable outside the sleeping back in spring and fall camping.I used the Smartwool until the moth holes got bigger than the orginal face hole.Looking for a Smartwool replacement, I found the TenTenTI. What an improvement! While I REALLY dislike the earholes, the hinged face part is a HUGE improvement over the single-hole balaclava! The big problem with the single hole is that with "one size fits all" under a helmet, the hole closes down peripheral vision FAR too much. The other problem with a single hole is arranging it on really cold days so the lower face is protected, but breath doesn't fog up glasses. The TenTenTI hinged balaclava solves both those problems. It is STILL the same nice light weight. It is STILL a bit too cool at the start of the ride, which means it is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT once I get warmed up (I just will NOT use a balaclava that is warm enough at the start of a ride.) It is still light enough, and extends far enough down the neck, to make early or late season camping really comfortable. And it uses the merino wool I have come to trust for temperature and body moisture control. If it were not for the earbud holes I'd give this five stars. I know I'm in the minority, but I really do not want earbuds on when I'm bicycling, especially since it is illegal in my state. And I really hate driving in town when folks with earbuds in ignore all the traffic around them and walk across regardless of their own safety.

Thin but warm
My husband purchased this for winter bicycling. He was worried that it might not work well because the material is so thin. However, he loves the balaclava and says it works great and kept his face warm. That's saying something as he is not a slow rider and wind chill is a factor.
